Ultrasonic Flow
Meters, as the names suggest, use the sound waves to measure the velocity of
water which is flowing in a pipe. When there is no water flowing in the pipes,
the frequencies of an ultrasonic wave which is transmitted into the pipe and
the reflections that it gets from the fluid are identical. When there is water
flowing, the reflected wave’s frequency is different due to phenomena called
the Doppler Effect. When the fluid moves faster, the frequency also starts
increasing linearly. The transmitter of the Ultrasonic Flow Meter then processes signals from the transmitted
wave and its reflections to determine the flow rate.
There are two
types of Ultrasonic Flow Meters:
- The Transit Time Flow Meter
- The Doppler Flow Meter
Both the Transit
Time Flow Meter and the Doppler Flow Meter have an almost
similar working process, but the only difference between the two is that
Transit Time Flow meter is more accurate and can be used to measure gas and
vapor too. But the Doppler Flow Meter is more affordable. So, depending on the
kind of work, you can choose any one of them.
How to use the flow meter?
The Ultrasonic
Flow Meters are very useful for most industries which employ some kind of
liquid because they are not obstructive to the ongoing process. They can be
mounted externally and do not have any parts which will stop the process. There
are portable meters also available and can be used to measure the liquid
flowing inside the pipe regardless of the material of the pipe. The only
important thing to keep in mind while buying an ultrasonic flow meter is the
fact that the liquid which you are planning to measure should have the ability
to reflect ultrasonic waves.
